Transcript

“A digital identity is an online or networked identity adopted or claimed in cyberspace by an individual, organization or electronic device.” (Technopedia.com, 2018) Digital data is scattered all across various platforms and social networks. (Himmelsbach, 2018)

With technology being such a large part of our everyday lives, we must be able to take care and keep secure our digital identity. Digital security is the protection of this online identity. It is “an all-encompassing term which includes the tools you can use to secure your identity, assets and technology in the online and mobile world.” (Just Ask Gemalto EN, 2018)

There are many issues surrounding this topic, such as identity theft and issues on social network platforms. These issues occur when people overlook or disregard the importance of keeping our digital identity secure. There have been many sexting incidents regarding middle to late adolescents, with the digital identities of many young adults being tarnished and judged due to an explicit image or video. Schools have gone to great lengths to minimise these issues, through anti-cyberbullying campaigns and restrictions on certain applications and websites on school servers, but the issues occur once the students have gone home. Many adolescents underestimate the importance of digital security, and why it is necessary to maintain a good digital reputation. (Johnson, 2018) Employers in the current age utilise social networks such as Facebook and Instagram, in order to examine a potential employee’s lifestyle and personality, which is further proof as to why we must keep our digital identities secure.

Teachers should educate their students about digital security measures, such as avoiding websites with malware and spam threats, using strong passwords consisting of numbers and letters, and only posting material that is appropriate, mature and will not present a negative impact in the future. This would mean that 21st century teaching and learning will be more secure, safe and productive.
