Digital Fluency

(Digital Fluency, 2018)

“Digital Fluency is the ability to use digital technologies in a confident manner”, and to be fluent, accurate, and flexible. ("Digital Fluency", 2018)

For one to be digitally fluent, they must be able to determine when to utilise specific digital technologies in order to achieve their desired goal. Most students these days already have a decent level of proficiency in recreational technologies, for example PS4, Xbox One, but teachers must encourage students to develop their proficiency in learning technologies.

Why is Digital Fluency important?
Technology has been incorporated into schools and offices all around the globe. For one to be successful in the 21st century world, they must be digitally fluent.
“In the years ahead, digital fluency will become a prerequisite for obtaining jobs, participating meaningfully in society, and learning throughout a lifetime." Resnick, 2002, p. 33 via White, 2013.

Digital fluency will be expected from everyone in the future, and that is why it is essential that digital fluency is encouraged and incorporated into school curriculums as well as the pedagogical practices of the teacher. ("Digital fluency / Teaching / enabling e-Learning - enabling eLearning", 2018)

This will enhance the digital fluency of the next generation and will prepare them for the higher expectations.

With the internet being the large phenomenon that it is, it contains many unsafe sites and information. Digital fluency can not only help one to fully utilise digital technologies but can also help to keep them safe online.

Ways to become digitally fluent
Students should develop the ability to proficiently use Microsoft software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint. (Howell, 2012) This will help with administrative/school work.

Becoming experienced with a variety of digital technologies such as podcasts, blogging, visual presentation formats such as Prezi.

Teachers should incorporate collaborative learning in the classrooms, through digital technologies such as OneNote or Google Docs.

What is a Digital World

“Digital World is a contemporary expression to communicate the importance of digital technology today.” (Chandra, 2018)

There were 14209000 internet subscribers in Australia in December of 2017 ("8153.0 - Internet Activity, Australia, December 2017", 2018)

There are 19.7 million active phone users in Australia ("Mobile phone users in Australia 2011-2019 | Statistic", 2018)

86% of Australian households have access to the internet ("8146.0 - Household Use of Information Technology, Australia, 2016-17", 2018)

Technology has enabled interaction with entertainment, cultural, and economic activities, of which many were once confined to mobility in the immediate environment (Howell, 2012, p.12; Wilson, Kellerman, & Corey, 2013, p. 93).

Entertainment, recreational, business and work-related activities can now all be practiced through the internet. The digital world has enabled for internet banking, online shopping, and online gaming as well as many other everyday activities that we do.

What is a digital pedagogy?
“It is the study of how to teach using digital technologies” (Howell, 2012)
Digital pedagogies are utilised to educate in the digital world.

Why do we need digital pedagogies?
Students are digitally expectant. They are ‘digital natives’ (Prensky, 2001 The students as well as their parents expect 21st century learning, where education is rich in digital technologies. (Howell, 2012) 21st Century learners prefer instancy, such as instant gratitude, instant information, hyperlinks etc. (“What is a digital world?”, 2018)
“Students of the digital world require interaction and active participation in their learning” (Howell, 2012)

21st century learning in the digital world has lead to many benefits in regards to teaching and learning. Students are very familiar and fluent with recreational technologies such as gaming consoles, so when digital technologies are introduced into learning, students find tasks more engaging and motivating. Since teaching in the digital world is a relatively new approach, the increased motivation and engagement leads to more productive and effective teaching. (Howell, 2012)

Digital Identity & Digital Security

(Digital Identity, 2018

Transcript

“A digital identity is an online or networked identity adopted or claimed in cyberspace by an individual, organization or electronic device.” (Technopedia.com, 2018) Digital data is scattered all across various platforms and social networks. (Himmelsbach, 2018)

With technology being such a large part of our everyday lives, we must be able to take care and keep secure our digital identity. Digital security is the protection of this online identity. It is “an all-encompassing term which includes the tools you can use to secure your identity, assets and technology in the online and mobile world.” (Just Ask Gemalto EN, 2018)

There are many issues surrounding this topic, such as identity theft and issues on social network platforms. These issues occur when people overlook or disregard the importance of keeping our digital identity secure. There have been many sexting incidents regarding middle to late adolescents, with the digital identities of many young adults being tarnished and judged due to an explicit image or video. Schools have gone to great lengths to minimise these issues, through anti-cyberbullying campaigns and restrictions on certain applications and websites on school servers, but the issues occur once the students have gone home. Many adolescents underestimate the importance of digital security, and why it is necessary to maintain a good digital reputation. (Johnson, 2018) Employers in the current age utilise social networks such as Facebook and Instagram, in order to examine a potential employee’s lifestyle and personality, which is further proof as to why we must keep our digital identities secure.

Teachers should educate their students about digital security measures, such as avoiding websites with malware and spam threats, using strong passwords consisting of numbers and letters, and only posting material that is appropriate, mature and will not present a negative impact in the future. This would mean that 21st century teaching and learning will be more secure, safe and productive.
